The CGPA to percentage formula
Indian boards don't all convert CGPA the same way, so this calculator lets you pick the formula your institution uses:
- CBSE (× 9.5): Percentage = CGPA × 9.5. This is CBSE's official rule. Example: 8.6 CGPA → 8.6 × 9.5 = 81.7%.
- Simple (× 10): Percentage = CGPA × 10. Used by several state boards and universities. Example: 8.6 CGPA → 86%.
- Custom: enter your university's own multiplier if it differs.
To go the other way — percentage back to CGPA — just divide: CGPA = Percentage ÷ multiplier. So 81.7% ÷ 9.5 = 8.6 CGPA.
Why does CBSE use 9.5?
CBSE studied the average marks of students against their grades and found that, on average, the percentage equivalent of a CGPA was about 9.5 times the CGPA. That's where the 9.5 factor comes from — it's not a random number. But it only applies to CBSE. Universities like Mumbai University officially use a different scale, and many private universities publish their own conversion tables. When a job or college form asks for your percentage, use the formula your board prescribes.
Quick conversion table (CBSE × 9.5)
| CGPA | Percentage | Class |
|---|---|---|
| 10.0 | 95.0% | Distinction |
| 9.0 | 85.5% | Distinction |
| 8.0 | 76.0% | First division |
| 7.0 | 66.5% | First division |
| 6.32 | 60.0% | First division cutoff |
| 6.0 | 57.0% | Second division |
| 5.0 | 47.5% | Second division |
60% (first division) matters a lot in India — it's the minimum many government jobs, bank exams, and postgraduate admissions ask for.
Frequently asked questions
How do you convert CGPA to percentage?
Multiply your CGPA by your board or university's multiplier. For CBSE, percentage = CGPA × 9.5. So a 8.6 CGPA = 8.6 × 9.5 = 81.7%. Many universities use × 10 instead — always check your institution's rule.
What is the CBSE formula for CGPA to percentage?
CBSE's official formula is: Percentage = CGPA × 9.5. For example, a CGPA of 9.2 becomes 9.2 × 9.5 = 87.4%. The 9.5 factor comes from CBSE's own study of average marks vs grades.
How do I convert percentage back to CGPA?
Divide the percentage by the same multiplier: CGPA = Percentage ÷ multiplier. With the CBSE formula, 85% ÷ 9.5 = 8.95 CGPA. Use the 'Percentage to CGPA' mode above.
Is CGPA × 9.5 correct for all Indian universities?
No. The × 9.5 formula is specific to CBSE. Many state boards and universities (like Mumbai University) use × 10, and some use their own scale or a 7-point formula. Always confirm with your university's official conversion rule before using it on applications.
What CGPA is equal to 60% or first division?
With the CBSE × 9.5 formula, 60% ÷ 9.5 = 6.32 CGPA. With a × 10 formula, 60% = 6.0 CGPA. First division (60%+) is the common cutoff for many government jobs and admissions in India.
