How age calculation works
Your age is the time elapsed between your birth date and today, expressed as full years, then full months, then remaining days. The algorithm works like subtraction with borrowing: if today's day-of-month is smaller than your birth day, it borrows the correct number of days from the previous month and carries one month. The same carry logic applies to months and years. Done this way, the result always matches the calendar exactly.
Why months vary — and why simple calculators get it wrong
Months are 28 to 31 days long, so "one month" is not a fixed number of days. A lazy calculator divides total days by 30.44 and rounds, which can be off by a day or two around month ends. The correct method counts by calendar dates: if you were born on 15 January 2000, you turn one month old on 15 February, whatever the month lengths in between. Leap years are handled automatically — 29 February birthdays roll to 1 March in non-leap years.
Worked example
Take a birth date of 14 March 1998 with today being 29 September 2026:
- Years: 2026 − 1998 = 28 full years (birthday already passed this year)
- Months: September − March = 6 full months
- Days: 29 − 14 = 15 days
So the age is 28 years, 6 months, 15 days — which is 342 months, 1,489 weeks and 10,426 days in total.
Everyday uses in India
Exact age comes up constantly on Indian paperwork. Government job applications and UPSC/SSC forms ask for age "as on" a cut-off date, often to the day. School admissions use minimum-age cut-offs (commonly 3+ years as on 31 March for nursery). Passport applications, pension and retirement planning (58–60 years depending on the employer), senior-citizen benefits (60+), and insurance policies all depend on precise age — not a rough number of years.

How is age calculated in years, months and days?
Years are full calendar years completed since the birth date, months are full months since the last birthday, and days are the remainder. The calculation borrows days from the previous month, which is why month lengths (28–31 days) matter.
Why do different age calculators sometimes disagree?
Disagreements usually come from leap years and from calculators that assume every month is 30 days instead of borrowing correctly across months of different lengths. A correct calculator counts full months by calendar date.
